Pickleball Equipment

Choosing a Pickleball Paddle

December 28, 2022 by Rona Leave a Comment

Pickleball equipment - paddles

The paddles used for pickleball can be made up of different types of materials that do different things. Some manufacturers make paddles with plastic cores and some make them with aluminum cores. Others cover their paddles with fiberglass while some finish it with graphite.

The most expensive paddle isn’t necessarily the best paddle for you. Focus on weight and grip size first and don’t be distracted by the colours, fancy graphics or catchy model names.

Factors to consider when choosing a paddle

1. Weight

Most pickleball experts agree that weight should be your top priority when choosing a paddle. The majority range from 170g to 255g. The weight of the paddle is very much a personal preference which depends on your strength and style of play.

2. Grip Size

The video below explains how to measure your tennis racquet grip size, but the technique is identical for pickleball paddles.

3. Paddle Material

Wood: The heaviest and cheapest.

Graphite: The most expensive option, but light and powerful.

Composite: A good compromise between a wood and graphite paddle. These paddles are constructed with a composite core and a fibreglass or carbon fibre surface.

There are a variety of pickleball paddles available including edgeless paddles, wide body paddles and oversized paddles.
